Gandarbal
The district of
Gandarbal
is located at a distance of 18 km from Srinagar. It is situated at an elevation of 1,619 m above sea level.
Gandarbal town is surrounded by other districts like Srinagar in the south, Bandipora to the north, Baramulla to the south, and Anantnag in the south-east.
According to the latest census of 2011, Gandarbal has a total population of 28,233. People usually speak in Kashmiri here but other languages like Pahari, Gujari, and Balti are also spoken here. The climate here remains moderate throughout the summer and during winter this place receives huge snowfall.
Visitors usually come here for trekking and camping.
Sonamarg
is accessible through Ganderbal. Water rafting games are also being organized at Sonamarg every year. There are few lakes which are worth seeing and visiting. Trekkers and mountaineers pass through these lakes during trekking.
There is also an important hydroelectricity power project. It is divided into three divisions,

that generate electricity from river Sindh.

From the Srinagar international airport, it will take you 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach here.
If traveling from Jammu, this route will take you almost 8 hours that is a distance of 281 km.
