Shankaragaurishvara Temple
Shankaragaurishvara Temple
is situated in the Pattan area of Baramulla. The temple was built by Shankaravarman, who ruled the valley between 883 and 902 AD.
Shankaragaurishvara Temple resembles very much the temple of Shankaracharya temple.
Shankaragaurishvara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The king who built this temple named it after himself. He also made another temple in the adjoining area in memory of his wife and named it after her, as Sugandhesha temple. Nowadays both the temples are in devastating condition.
The infrastructure of the temple is an elaboration of Kashmiri architecture. The temple which is built next to it is in the peristyle, the remnants of which are still visible. The temple has now got a place only for the tourism of Jammu and Kashmir. No religious ceremonies are held there for now.
