Hazratbal Mosque
is situated on the northern banks of Dal Lake.
Hazratbal Mosque is considered to be the
holiest place in Kashmir
. A relic is believed to be there, which is supposed to be Prophet Mohammad’s (s.a.w) hair strand. The people who take care of the shrine are known as Nishandehs. It is the responsibility of Nishandehs to display the relic to the people on special occasions. A huge number of people came here with great belief and offer Namaz here.
The place for prayer is different for both men and women. The construction of Hazratbal Mosque started in 1968 and ended in 1979 under the Muslim awqaf authority. The infrastructure of the mosque is mainly made of white marble and for the furnishing of the floor, the beautiful carpets are being placed. The inner side of the mosque is centrally heated now.
People from all over the valley come here on special religious occasions. Hazratbal mosque is thronged by lakhs of people on religious congregations.
The market outside the mosque provides you an opportunity to bring home some unique pieces and clothing items. Street food is also available in the market. There are some local cafés and restaurants around the market.
You can take the
Shikara ride
as well, for it is situated on the banks of dal lake. The shikara can take you to the main side of dal lake and can take you to Char-Chinari.
