is built at a height of 1000 feet from the ground level and overlooks the whole city of Srinagar. This temple is situated at the Zabarwan mountains on the
Shankaracharya hill
and is known as Jyeshteshwara.
Shankaracharya Temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. The ancient architecture adds elegance to the temple. There are almost 240 steps that take you up to the temple hall. Regular worship is done at the temple and a lot of pilgrims visit the temple during Amarnath Yatra.
Shankaracharya Temple got its name from the Adi Shankara who visited here in ancient times. Its is also known as
Jyeshteshwara temple
, and is very famous among Hindus.
Gulab Singh was the first to construct the footsteps to the temple from the Durga Naag temple side. Later a ruler of Mysore came to Kashmir and add electrical installation to the temple. The temple was named Shankaracharayya after Adi Shankaracharayya of Dwarkaapeetham. The government of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 constructed the full-fledged road.
